Publish Date: 2004-01-01
Features: This book is compiled based on the new College English Curriculum Teaching Requirements and the new CET-4 Adjustment Requirements issued by the Ministry of Education, featuring the following four characteristics:
1. Authored by Experts Who Set the Questions
The author, Zhang Yongguang, is a senior professor at Renmin University of China with nearly 10 years of study and work experience abroad. He has conducted in-depth and unique research on English vocabulary and its memorization methods, and his teaching style is highly favored by students. The author personally wrote 30 sets of vocabulary and grammar mock tests, arranged in difficulty from low to high, emphasizing the scientific nature of learning. He has used the content of this book to teach at Renmin University, which was well-received by students.
2. Compiled According to the New Teaching Requirements of the Ministry of Education
The Ministry of Education has newly formulated the College English Curriculum Teaching Requirements (Trial Version), dividing the teaching requirements into three levels: general, higher, and advanced. The general requirements are the basic standards that non-English majors in higher education institutions should achieve upon graduation. The total vocabulary should amount to 4,500 words and 700 phrases, with 2,000 words being active vocabulary—words that students are expected to master and use fluently in both spoken and written communication. This book is based on two sources: the general requirements in the College English Curriculum Teaching Requirements and the CET-4 Syllabus.
3. Reflecting and Predicting the Changing Trends in CET-4 Question Design
Since 2003, subtle changes have emerged in CET-4 test questions, particularly in the vocabulary and structure section. Grammar questions have been significantly reduced, while vocabulary discrimination questions have sharply increased, with the examination style gradually aligning with that of CET-6. Numerous synonyms, antonyms, and near-homophones can easily confuse test-takers. In reality, mastering the meanings of synonyms and near-homophones, especially synonyms, is a challenge in vocabulary learning. To address this, the author selects a certain proportion of easily confused vocabulary in each test set, providing comparative analysis to highlight their similarities and differences, helping candidates memorize and master these words.
4. Demonstrating the Contextual Use of Vocabulary in Solutions
Since 2004, the Ministry of Education has made major adjustments to the CET-4 exam. The revised test will focus on assessing students' listening, speaking, and English usage skills while expanding their vocabulary. To enhance candidates' English usage skills and meet the new exam requirements, the author provides example sentences for key vocabulary in the solutions, ing the context in which the words are used to illustrate their "living" meaning in practice. Detailed yet concise explanations further aid students in understanding the meanings of the vocabulary.
