The ideological achievements and artistic essence of Water Margin are primarily reflected in the first seventy chapters. The author vividly depicts numerous heroic heroes, especially Song Jiang, Lin Chong, Wu Song, and Lu Zhishen, Li Kui, Yang Zhi, and others, who are forced to become outlaws and are driven to Liangshan Mountain. It praises the outlaws led by Song Jiang, who are "a family of different surnames under the same sky," united in solidarity to "avenge the heavens, protect the borders, and ensure the safety of the people," while also engaging in the chivalrous spirit of raiding wealthy households and helping the poor. Water Margin is a long heroic romance and one of the representative works of ancient Chinese long novels, created based on the story of Song Jiang's uprising. The Song Jiang uprising occurred during the reign of Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty. Records of the uprising can be found in the "Annals of Emperor Huizong," "Biography of Hou Meng," and "Biography of Zhang Shuni" in the History of the Song Dynasty. From the Southern Song Dynasty onwards, the story of the Song Jiang uprising spread among the people. The Collected Conversations of the Drunken Scholar records some independent legends about the Water Margin heroes, while Remnants of the Great Song in the Xuanhe Era connects many Water Margin stories together, approaching the style of a long novel. In the Yuan Dynasty, numerous Water Margin plays emerged, with a group of heroes from Liangshan appearing on stage. Water Margin is the result of the long-standing folk of the story of Song Jiang's uprising, absorbing the nourishment of folk literature.
