Features: Modern operating systems can be divided into two main parts: the core of the operating system and peripheral software. Peripheral software consists of command interpreters, numerous commands and utilities, various library functions, advanced programming languages supported by the operating system, and graphical user interfaces. When users interact with an operating system, they first engage with and utilize peripheral software. However, the core of the operating system is the foundation, heart, and soul of the entire software system, a shining pearl on the crown of software. Without understanding or comprehending the core of the operating system, even if one can use the operating system, it is only to know what but not why. Therefore, to use the operating system with ease, freedom, and creativity, one must learn and understand its core.
The author has been leading and participating in the development of domestic operating systems since the late 1980s. Due to work requirements, he has analyzed the cores and source codes of operating systems such as UNIX System V Release 4.0, Mach 2.5, Mach 3.0, and Tru64 UNIX V5.0. He has also trained technical personnel at various levels in UNIX core concepts, accumulating extensive experience. This book does not focus on how to use UNIX/Linux or how to program on UNIX/Linux. Instead, it aims to delve deeper, helping readers enter the core of UNIX/Linux, understand and master them, thereby enabling better application of UNIX and Linux. This book is suitable for a broad range of software developers. It can also serve as a textbook or reference for operating system courses in higher education institutions.
