Features: On the occasion of the Japanese Contact Lens Society's glossary of contact lens terminology being translated into Chinese and published in China in the form of a Chinese-English-Japanese contact lens terminology dictionary, I, on behalf of the Japanese Contact Lens Society, would like to express my heartfelt congratulations. The history of contact lenses can be traced back to the time of Leonardo da Vinci, but its practical application can be said to have begun about 50 years ago, following the use of PMMA materials. In the 1970s, water-containing soft contact lenses made of HEMA were developed, and subsequently, oxygen-permeable rigid contact lenses with excellent oxygen-permeability were developed. The materials of contact lenses have become more diverse, and their scope of application has also become broader. The Japanese Contact Lens Society has worked to standardize and unify the terminology related to contact lenses, aiming to avoid misunderstandings, by editing and publishing a series of terms in the Journal of the Japanese Contact Lens Society. On this basis, the society has further annotated and explained these terms, compiled them into a book, and published it, thereby actively promoting the use of correct, standardized, and unified professional language among all members of the society in the field of contact lenses.
This time, Professor Xie Peiying of the Eye and Vision Optics Research Center, Peking University Health Science Center, organized the translation of this glossary and compiled it into a Chinese-English-Japanese dictionary. The Japanese Contact Lens Society believes that this dictionary not only serves as a link for medical exchanges between China and Japan but also benefits broader exchanges between the two countries in the future research of contact lenses. Therefore, the society has given strong support to the publication of this dictionary.
Finally, I look forward to greater progress and development in the clinical and research aspects of contact lenses in China. This dictionary includes explanations for over 300 contact lens-related terms from a practical perspective, with one-third of the terms accompanied by vivid illustrations. The content covers various professional terms related to contact lenses, including materials, manufacturing processes, fitting methods, clinical applications, and complications, with a broad scope. Additionally, each entry in the dictionary is arranged in a three-language format (Chinese, English, and Japanese) and includes English and Japanese indexes, maximizing the utility of the dictionary for a wide range of readers. I believe that the publication of this dictionary will provide necessary assistance to domestic peers in learning and mastering the ever-emerging new knowledge and methods, as well as in querying and translating professional contact lens terminology, offering valuable reference for unifying and standardizing the professional language of contact lenses in China.
