That Year in New York Coffee Red--Novel Volume (Novel Volume)

Author: Hongying
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2004-01-01
Features: Among these writers, Hongying is quite special. Among overseas Chinese literary writers, there are probably only Gao Xingjian, Yan Geling, and Hongying who can make a living from writing year-round. This series of books includes one of Hongying's novel collections, mainly the middle-length story "That Year in New York Coffee Was Red." It is a "futuristic novel" with intentionally extravagant and imaginative flights of fancy. Utopian novels have never been well-developed in China. They flourished in the early 20th century but then died out. The various reservations about prophecy are secondary; the problem is that China has been practicing a certain kind of utopia, meaning that the spiritual "presence" of the Chinese relies on leaning on the future to support itself. To this day, Chinese novelists have either never been able to or have been unwilling to imagine the future. Hongying's unique experimental approach may stem from the gradual influence she received while living among a nation that produced Gulliver's Travels.
