Features: "Mr. Cai's book, from a literary perspective, can only be considered mediocre. But, it is a mine, towering like a mountain, with lush forests, flowing springs and waterfalls, containing coal, iron, gold, and jade. Naturally, there is also soil, and inconspicuous sand and gravel. Its extraordinary quality lies in its rich reserves. As mentioned earlier, it was not born out of obedience to orders or reviews, but was born in time. During the collapse of the feudal system and the turmoil of the new era, he devoted his life to composing this epic, which can be heard as a dirge or seen as a catalyst for the new era. From a practical significance standpoint, its vitality is still growing. How many people today can still read the traditional character edition of the 24 Histories of China? Not many, not even the simplified character version of the classical texts. But our national history must inherit and continue. Reading Mr. Cai's book can guide you into the world, and it is the only one, with no substitutes. In this sense, it truly deserves great praise."
Cai Dongfan, a famous historian and novelist of the Republic of China, wrote "China's Popular Historical Romances" with the aim of "saving the nation through romance." It took him ten years to complete this work, covering the history of China's feudal period from the Qin Dynasty to 1928, comprehensively documenting 2,166 years of history. Renowned for its rich content and well-researched sources, it was highly favored by readers. The writing style of this series combined the structure of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and Mao Zonggang's annotations, featuring main text, annotations, and overall summaries, all self-annotated by Cai Dongfan. Through these annotations, he either refuted fictional claims, noted the sources and differences of certain historical materials, provided popular explanations for ancient systems of governance, laws, geography, artifacts, titles, and even colloquialisms, or praised or criticized certain characters, all to help readers understand the main text and clarify history.
In terms of selecting and using historical materials, Cai Dongfan primarily relied on "official histories" while also incorporating folk histories and anecdotes. Anything derived from folk histories or anecdotes was necessarily supported by collateral evidence, and he "carefully verified" the materials to ensure accuracy. Due to his strong emphasis on historical authenticity and opposition to fictional inventions, this romance, though popular, holds significant historical value.
"Romance of the Qing Dynasty" is one of the "China's Popular Historical Romances." It consists of 100 chapters, covering the rise of the Qing Dynasty in the northeast and its fall with the abdication of the Xuantong Emperor, nearly three centuries of history. Major historical events in the book are all based on reliable sources, woven into chapters that are mostly readable, believable, and valuable, marking a new style in historical fiction.
