Patient's question:
For many months, have you been eating very little? Now, when you tease him, he will laugh, and he will cry when he is hungry, laugh when picked up, and cry when uncomfortable after urinating or defecating. His reactions are now the same as those of a normal child. Why is this?Past treatment history and effectiveness: Several hospitals and doctors have said that it cannot be treated. What kind of help is needed: The child is now three months old. When teased, he will laugh; when hungry, he will cry; when picked up, he will laugh; and when uncomfortable after urinating or defecating, he will cry, just like a normal child. Why is this? Will this condition allow him to be self-sufficient when he grows up? How long can he live? Can this condition be treated?
Doctor's answer:
Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is not treatable. As he ages, his intellectual disability will become more apparent. Their IQ is relatively low, typically ranging from 25 to 50. This level of IQ allows them to have some basic survival skills, including the ability to smile and cry when hungry. However, as they age, the gap between them and normal children will become increasingly noticeable.
