How many times to massage for neonatal torticollis

Patient's question:

My baby is now 54 days old. When she was about half a month old, we noticed a lump on her left neck. It was diagnosed as torticollis. How should I massage it? In which department should I find someone? How many times a week should I do the massage?

Doctor's answer:

The incidence of congenital torticollis is not very low. Our outpatient clinic can usually accommodate 10 such children per week. Generally, within about 10 days, a hard nodule can be found on one side of the neck. The child's head is always tilted to one side. Hospital ultrasound examinations show that the localized thickening of the sternocleidomastoid muscle on one side is usually between 8 mm and 20 mm. Orthopedic doctors usually tell parents to massage it at home. If the condition does not improve, surgery will be performed after one year.
