Patient's question:
My child is 6 years old and has a lot of small red spots on their hands, mouth ulcers, and red bumps on their buttocks. I want to ask if it could be hand, foot, and mouth disease. There are no spots on their feet.Doctor's answer:
Hand, foot, and mouth disease typically presents with: acute onset, fever, recurrent scattered vesicles on the oral mucosa, and maculopapular or vesicular lesions on the hands, feet, and buttocks. The vesicles may be surrounded by an inflammatory erythema, with less fluid inside. It may be accompanied by symptoms such as cough, runny nose, and poor appetite. In some cases, only rash or herpetic pharyngitis may be observed. In some cases, the rash may be atypical, such as appearing on a single site or only manifesting as maculopapular lesions.
