What are the symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease or herpangina?

Patient's question:

What are the symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease or herpangina?? My child suddenly had a fever two days ago, with a high of 40.4, and then went to the hospital. The doctor said his throat was red and swollen. Yesterday, the fever subsided, but today he's not in good spirits and is vomiting even though he's not feverish.

Doctor's answer:

Recurrent episodes typically present with sudden onset accompanied by high fever (38.9°C–40°C, or even higher), and may be accompanied by convulsions. In infants and young children, anorexia, vomiting, and irritability/crying are common (these symptoms may appear alone or in fragments). Older children may complain of discomfort, headache, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and abdominal pain. A thorough throat examination usually reveals congestion (a bright red throat) and small yellowish or whitish blisters. After approximately 24 hours, the blisters rupture, leaving behind superficial yellowish/whitish ulcers with a diameter of 3–4 mm, surrounded by prominent erythema.
