My baby has been having diarrhea, can they eat probiotics?

Patient's question:

My baby is almost four months old and has been having diarrhea, sometimes even with blood streaks. Can I supplement with probiotics? How should I do it? Since birth, my baby has had diarrhea, and I don't know why. My baby was delivered via C-section. No, I want to know if it's okay to take probiotics and how long it will take to see results.

Doctor's answer:

Child diarrhea is a disease caused by various pathogens and multiple different causes. Most affected children are under the age of two, with infants aged 6 to 11 months being particularly susceptible. The peak occurrence of nausea and vomiting primarily happens between June and September each year, as well as from October to the following January. Summer nausea and vomiting are usually caused by bacterial infections, often resulting in mucus-like stools with a foul odor. Autumn nausea and vomiting is mostly brought on by rotavirus, commonly presenting as watery or thin, paste-like stools, but without a foul odor. If your baby only experiences nausea and vomiting without other symptoms such as dry heaving or crying, there is nothing to worry about.
