How long should children with epilepsy maintain sleep?

Patient's question:

My child is still young, but he has once again experienced symptoms of twitching in his hands and feet. The spasms are very painful, and each time he has a recurrence, he cries very intensely, which breaks my heart. I want to understand how long deep sleep should be maintained for children with epilepsy? What kind of help is needed: How long should deep sleep be maintained for children with epilepsy?

Doctor's answer:

Overexertion leads to the decomposition and slow metabolism of muscles throughout the body, while causing lactic acid to accumulate in the body. If the blood becomes overly acidic, it can easily trigger a recurrence of epilepsy. Insufficient sleep can increase brain excitability. Even in normal individuals, if they do not get enough sleep, their electroencephalogram (EEG) can show patterns similar to those of epilepsy patients. Therefore, epilepsy care requires adequate deep sleep. Adults should aim for at least 7-9 hours of deep sleep per day, while children should have at least 8-16 hours.
