Why does the child always come back to nursing after finishing the milk, and what should be done?

Patient's question:

The baby is now four months old. Recently, she has been spitting up milk after feeding. It happens about three or four times a day. I'm so worried and can't find the reason. Usually, she burps, and I also try to burp her, but she still spits up. What could be causing this? What should I do?

Doctor's answer:

There are many factors that can cause a child to wean from breastfeeding. If the nipple hole is too small, the child has to suck hard, which can lead to air and milk being drawn in together, making it easy to spit up. If the issue is with the nipple, we recommend trying a new nipple.
Alternatively, it could be due to incomplete gastrointestinal development in infants. Their esophagus is short, and the opening where it connects to the stomach cannot close completely, making spitting up more likely. When feeding an infant, the angle should not be too flat. After feeding, gently pat the baby's back to help them burp, allowing the air swallowed while drinking to be released, which can reduce spitting up.
