Patient's question:
The baby is almost five months old. Lately, she has had some diarrhea. Basically, as soon as she eats milk, she has a bowel movement. The stool started to be thick and quite yellow, a bit dry, but after a while, it becomes a bit watery, sometimes with some mucus. It has been happening for two or three days now. What should I do?Doctor's answer:
The main symptoms of infantile diarrhea are loose stools and increased frequency. The stool may resemble egg soup or foam, appearing yellow-green, or mixed with a small amount of mucus and soapy-like substances due to indigestion, occasionally accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Mild cases may not show dehydration, or only mild to moderate dehydration. Severe diarrhea can occur more than ten times a day, or even dozens of times. It may be accompanied by symptoms such as fever, loss of appetite, vomiting, moderate to severe dehydration, electrolyte loss, acid-base imbalance, which can make the infant appear listless or irritable, experience abdominal pain, pale and dry skin, sunken eyes, reduced tearing during crying, cold limbs, and decreased urine output. Then shock may occur. The causes of infantile diarrhea should be analyzed and treated accordingly.
