What is the reason for blood streaks in a baby's stool?

Patient's question:

My baby had green bowel movements for about ten days in August, and then a stool test showed 20-30 white blood cells and 6-10 red blood cells. The doctor recommended hospitalization, and the baby received intravenous fluids for six days before going home. A few days later, the baby started having golden yellow bowel movements. When the baby recovered, our whole family was happy. But recently, I sometimes noticed a few red blood streaks in the baby's stool, so I took the baby to the hospital for a stool test. The results showed 2-4 white blood cells and a weak positive occult blood test. The doctor prescribed a course of cefixime to take at home. After four days, we did another stool test, and there were no white blood cells or occult blood. But why can I still see blood streaks in my baby's stool?

Doctor's answer:

The baby's stool contains red streaks resembling blood, which may be due to possible intestinal inflammation. If the child is breastfed, it's also worth considering whether the mother consumed extremely cold or refrigerated foods.
1. Have the child's stool checked for a routine examination to confirm whether intestinal inflammation is present. If it is, active anti-inflammatory treatment is necessary.
2. If the child is breastfed, the mother should avoid consuming extremely cold or refrigerated foods such as oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, grapes, watermelons, cantaloupe, and dragon fruit.
