What should I do if a 13-day-old baby has a bowel movement more than ten times a day?

Patient's question:

A 13-day-old infant has been having continuous diarrhea. They have been having 10 episodes of diarrhea a day. What should be done?

Doctor's answer:

At this stage, the baby's bowel movements can occur this many times a day. This is perfectly normal and does not require special attention. Generally, it takes babies until around two and a half months to have an increase in bowel movements. By then, they will typically have about three bowel movements per day. If the baby's bowel movements are loose, there is no need for special solutions. Otherwise, by three months, the bowel movements may become particularly hard, potentially causing anal injury and bleeding. Bowel movements should naturally be relatively loose.
