How to handle a fever in a 7-month-old baby

Patient's question:

My baby is a premature child, and I was very worried about the child's condition from the beginning. Recently, the child has had a series of symptoms, and I am also very worried, afraid that the child's condition will worsen. How should I handle a fever in a 7-month-old baby?

Doctor's answer:

It is generally believed that the height of fever does not reflect the severity of the disease. In newborns and the frail, the temperature may not be very high when they are ill, while a common cold in children can cause fever. Persistent high fever often indicates a more complex illness. The normal body temperature of infants is slightly higher than that of adults. The normal basal body temperature for children is within the range of 36.9℃ to 37.5℃. Generally, when the temperature exceeds the basal body temperature by more than 1℃ or above, it is considered fever. Among these, low-grade fever refers to a temperature fluctuating around 38℃, while high fever is when the temperature is above 39℃.
