Features: This certificate serves as the basis for assessment and recruitment by personnel departments. Obtaining an authoritative, nationwide-recognized English proficiency certificate through the exam is a recognized proof of English proficiency and a common credential for career choices. The National English Proficiency Test (NEPT) is set up with five levels and an additional level, which will gradually replace existing English exams such as the junior high school entrance exam, vocational and technical school foreign language tests, senior high school graduation exams, self-study public English courses, adult college entrance exams, and government-sponsored foreign language proficiency tests. It also outlines the direction for the English sections of the college entrance exam and postgraduate entrance exam. The NEPT system is designed and developed by the National Education Examination Administration Center. It is open to the public and consists of five levels. Its purpose is to reasonably set evaluation standards for each level based on China's actual English teaching and social development needs, using a unified ability scale. It focuses on testing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, ensuring the equivalence of exam scores across different sessions at the same level. It gradually connects the exam results to higher education, overseas studies, and self-study, achieving diversified applications of exam scores. Level 5 of PETS is the highest level among the five, with standards equivalent to the end of the second year of a university English major in China. Candidates who pass this level have English proficiency that generally meets the requirements for pursuing master's degrees or conducting academic research abroad. This level of English also fulfills the basic needs for professional and managerial work in both domestic and international settings. This textbook contains sixteen units, each covering a communicative topic, including:
1. Text: The text serves as reading material that reflects the topic. Some units include two texts. To enhance candidates' interest and aid their understanding of the text, as well as for oral practice related to familiar information, several questions are provided after each text.
2. Vocabulary and Phrases: Words and phrases appearing in the unit texts are listed here, including their international phonetic symbols, part of speech, Chinese definitions, and Chinese definitions of phrases.
3. Word Formation: Each unit provides a brief explanation of word formation.
4. Notes: The notes focus on the text, covering three aspects: first, introducing relevant cultural background knowledge to deepen candidates' understanding of the text; second, highlighting difficulties in grammar and vocabulary; third, analyzing complex sentences grammatically and providing examples to explain linguistic points and key knowledge, aiming to train candidates in flexible language application.
5. Exercises: The exercises are designed based on the unit topics and key content, allowing candidates to assess their learning progress. The question types align with the exam syllabus to facilitate preparation for PETS Level 5.
At the end of the textbook are seven appendices, including: (1) Sample written test papers; (2) Functional concept table; (3) Language skills table; (4) Answers to text questions; (5) Listening exercise transcripts; (6) After-class exercise answers; (7) Vocabulary and phrase summary.
The accompanying MP3 disc includes recordings of the texts, new words, and after-class listening exercises, which can be played on computers, as well as CD players, VCD players, and DVD players with MP3 functionality.
