Features: This book is a part of the "Crash Course: Simulation Training" series, designed for candidates to practice for the final stage of the examination. While systematically reviewing and consolidating fundamental knowledge and skills in college English, this book also provides valuable analysis and problem-solving strategies tailored to the format and assessment content of the CET-4 standardized tests. It aims to enhance candidates' practical test-taking abilities.
The book selects and combines eight authentic college English tests for CET-4, carefully chosen from authoritative books and materials published domestically and internationally in recent years. These tests are of high quality, reliable, cover a broad scope of knowledge, and include representative testing points. Additionally, the appendix includes full original tests from the June 2000 and June 2001 national CET-4 exams, arranged with corresponding answer keys to facilitate comparative practice.
In terms of question types, in addition to traditional sections like Listening Comprehension, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and Grammar Structure, Cloze, and Writing, the book also includes newly added types like Compound Dictation, Short Answer Questions, and Translation, to provide targeted training based on practical scenarios.
The explanations for each test are organized in sequential order, offering not only correct answers but also key focus points and methods for analyzing and solving problems. The Listening Comprehension section provides practical guidance on accurately understanding direct expressions, identifying key words or details, making inferences based on given information, and summarizing the central idea of passages.
The Reading Comprehension section offers comprehensive guidance across six aspects (excluding some questions that require minimal technique). These aspects are:
(1) The meaning of the question (what each question is asking);
(2) Key assessment points (what skills each question tests);
(3) Option interpretations (the meaning of each of the four choices);
(4) Techniques and tips (the correct approach or skill-based methods for solving each question). It is hoped that this guidance will significantly improve candidates' reading comprehension skills.
The Vocabulary and Grammar Structure section covers a wide range of topics, including all aspects assessed in the CET-4 over the years. The explanations focus on word meaning differentiation, collocations, verb phrase distinctions, prepositional phrase distinctions, non-finite verb forms, recognizing complex objects, identifying absolute phrases, inverted word order, common sentence patterns, and subjunctive mood, to strengthen candidates' discrimination and test-taking abilities in these areas.
The Cloze section emphasizes logical connections between sentences while focusing on word meaning differentiation, such as verb, adjective, preposition, fixed phrase, pronoun, and adverb usage distinctions, to help candidates improve their adaptability and address weak areas.
Writing has always been a weak point for many candidates. This book provides targeted guidance on topic review, thesis identification, and paragraph structure. Reference model answers are also included to help candidates understand how to organize materials around the topic and express the central idea in each paragraph.
Zhou Jianping, the chief editor of this volume, is responsible for the overall design, selection of reading comprehension and writing materials for each test, and writing the test explanations. Jiang Yongguo, the deputy editor, oversees the selection and explanation of listening comprehension, vocabulary and grammar structure, and cloze sections. Professor Lu Bo from China Pharmaceutical University participated in writing the explanations for six passages in the reading comprehension section. We sincerely thank her for her contributions.
Due to the tight schedule and large volume of writing, along with limited expertise, errors and omissions are inevitable. We kindly request criticism and corrections from fellow experts and readers.
The full series is divided into two parts—Power-building and Crash Course—comprising five volumes. The Power-building series consists of four volumes: Listening and Speaking, Vocabulary·Grammar·Cloze, Reading Comprehension, and Writing, which systematically explain various test formats and language fundamentals, providing analytical methods related to problem-solving through examples and exercises. The Crash Course volume focuses on question trends and comprehensive problem-solving techniques, emphasizing practical training.
