Features: My deepest impression of Zhang Yimou is his resilience, perseverance, and keenness. His eagle-like sharp eyes always give me the impression that he can see through everything. My interaction with Zhang Yimou has always been rooted in work. From 1988 to 2000, we discussed everything—from his films to his operas, from his artistic concepts to his life attitudes, and from literature to society. The topics we covered were very diverse. Zhang Yimou’s conversations are both emotional and practical, just like his personality and actions. When it comes to Zhang Yimou as a person, I think he has a widely respected reputation in the film industry. His diligence, determination, relentless pursuit, genius, and creative spirit, as well as his passion for filmmaking, are all well-known. What’s unique about my focus on him is that I have a deeper understanding and respect for him. Because I know the struggles of filmmakers—they’re not an easy bunch. Regarding the book Confronting Zhang Yimou, I don’t want to say too much. I just hope it’s useful to the readers. This way, I’ll feel worthy of the time Zhang Yimou spent in sincere conversations with me, and also worthy of all the friends who put in effort for this book.
