Publishing Date: 1998-10-01
Features: "Encyclopedia of Chinese Martial Arts" strives to cover a broad range of knowledge domains, including the historical evolution, fundamental theories, styles and weapons, techniques and training methods, competitions and training, teaching and research, management systems, classical texts and publications, and martial arts figures in Chinese martial arts. It places special emphasis on reflecting the new developments in martial arts since the reform and opening-up in 1978 and the latest achievements in martial arts research. At the beginning of the book, there is a classified index of all entries, which helps readers understand the general outline of the discipline of martial arts and locate entries by subject categories. To illustrate the hierarchical relationships between entries within each category, the classified index is arranged in a stepped format. The main text of the entries is organized in the order of the classified index, and an entry-level Pinyin index and a stroke index for Chinese characters are provided at the end of the book for multi-channel retrieval. The introductory paragraphs of the entries generally begin with a qualitative description or a summary, followed by further elaboration. Longer entries include one or two to three levels of subheadings. The book is accompanied by over 1,611 black-and-white illustrations, primarily depicting styles and weapons, techniques and training methods, which help readers understand the content of the entries. The color illustrations are compiled into 10 thematic groups, totaling 307 images, serving as an important supplement to the main text of the entries. Some of these images are published for the first time and hold documentary value.
