Features: This book is a new achievement in a series of World Bank research reports, aiming to present to a broad readership the research findings of the World Bank on development policy issues. It accumulates both known and unknown information on these issues, holding significant importance for exploring the appropriate public policies needed for economic development. The book collects existing and new research methods from several social sciences to examine the costs of long-standing gender discrimination on social welfare and national development prospects. It reveals how formal and informal social institutions shape gender roles and gender relations, and how family decision-making and behaviors replicate those gender roles. The book also explores the relationship between gender equality and economic development, as well as the role of social public policies and civil activities in promoting gender equality. It argues that policies that neglect gender relations and fail to address gender gaps will limit the efficiency of development. The book proposes combining institutional institutional reform with the promotion of economic development. The former aims to provide gender equality in rights and opportunities, while the latter aims to provide incentives that can bring about gender equality in resource allocation and participation in development. At the same time, active measures should be taken to correct the long-standing gender disparities in resources and political discourse. In the fight against gender discrimination to enable greater societal benefits, nations, civil organizations, and the international community will all play an important role and contribute significantly.
