Patient's question:
I will ask the doctor about my child who is 7 years old. He has had high fever seizures before. The seizures started when he was two years old and have occurred many times since then. Last month, he had two more seizures due to fever, and he often wakes up from his dreams at night. Is this epilepsy?Doctor's answer:
Initially, if high fever seizures do not improve, they may gradually evolve into low fever seizures or even afebrile seizures, which can transform into epilepsy. It is recommended that you go to a large hospital for some tests, such as a 24-hour electroencephalogram (EEG). If the current EEG shows no issues and it is merely high fever seizures, but your child experiences them frequently, medication may be needed to maintain control. If there are abnormalities, it could be diagnosed as epilepsy. In most cases, medication is used for generalized seizures, typically with sodium valproate oral liquid and levetiracetam oral liquid, which generally does not lead to intellectual disability.
