Features: This book studies the broader cultural background of Xu Zhimo's literary works and personality formation from the perspective of comparative literature. It covers Xu Zhimo's study abroad experiences, global travels, translation, and the influence of heterogeneous cultures. Western writers such as Hardy, Mansfield, Rolland, the philosopher Russell, and poets Byron, Shelley, Keats, Burns, and Wordsworth, as well as Eastern figures like Tagore, all had direct or indirect impacts on Xu Zhimo. Additionally, literary traditions of Romanticism, Aestheticism, and even the "Victorian era" profoundly influenced both Xu Zhimo the person and his works. Over the years, I have been engaged in research on comparative literature theory, focusing on metaphysical issues such as the epistemology, ontology, and methodology of comparative literature. This time, conducting a more comprehensive and systematic case study of Xu Zhimo represents an attempt on my part. To deeply study a writer and their works, it is essential to thoroughly gather diverse primary sources; grounding oneself in authentic materials is crucial. Careful organization and practical thinking and exploration of these original sources allow one to grasp the important stages of a person's life and the origins of their works, thereby achieving genuine research results. To achieve this goal, first and foremost, everything must be based on facts, using Xu Zhimo's life experiences, thought processes, literary works, and friendships and travels as evidence. Secondly, based on an in-depth understanding of Xu Zhimo's thoughts and actions, value judgments should be made, with the aim of more fairly reflecting the development and evolution of Xu Zhimo's creative ideas and theoretical implications.
