Due to the physical and mental torment he has endured, he comes to believe in the rich people's view that "they are naturally bad." The spirit of the bronze bell makes him have a nightmare before the New Year's bell rings. He finally recognizes the hypocrisy of the rich and his own position. The author criticizes the oppressors and encourages the oppressed people. At the moment the church bells ring, he finally casts aside lies and embraces truth.
