The Northeast Field Army, which had achieved remarkable victories in the Liaoshen and Beiping campaigns, had now been renamed the Fourth Field Army. After being tempered by two major strategic battles, the Fourth Field Army gained a reputation, with a large number of troops and excellent equipment. Now, Mao Zedong wanted to use this strategic mobile force. To support Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping's army and Chen Yi and Su Yu's army in launching the Yangtze River crossing campaign, Mao Zedong instructed the Fourth Field Army to organize a vanguard corps, march south to Central China, threaten Wuhan, and tie down the Bai Chongxi Group. Thereafter, the Central Military Commission further clarified the tasks of the Fourth Field Army: to advance into Central South China, eliminate the Bai Chongxi Group and the Yu Hanmou Group, liberate and manage the six provinces of Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangdong, and Guangxi.
