Author: Ancient Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Appraisal Group
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2000-07-01
Features: During the flourishing trend of imitating ancient styles in the early Qing painting scene, a group of professional painters with literary backgrounds resided in Jinling (now Nanjing). They paid attention to drawing nourishment from nature, and their painting techniques, based on inheriting the traditions of Song and Yuan dynasties, also incorporated innovations. Gong Xian, the foremost member of the "Eight Masters of Jinling," was skilled in poetry and painting. His landscape works often depicted scenes from Nanjing, with a rich and profound ink technique, layer upon layer of accumulation. The striking contrast between ink and white created an atmosphere of deep and serene light in the mountains and forests, evoking a profound and tranquil depth, which greatly influenced later generations. This volume includes 113 representative works by painters of the Jinling school, such as Ye Xin, Wu Hong, Hu Chao, Zou Zhe, Fan Yi, Fan Qi, Xie Sun, Gao Cen, Gao Yu, Gong Xian, and Chen Zhuo, reflecting their individual styles and mutual exchanges through poetry, calligraphy, and painting.
