Patient's question:
My baby girl is 82 days old. In the past month, her stools have been yellowish with a slightly greenish tint, sometimes appearing dark green like meconium. She only eats formula and water, along with fish oil, and a oral liquid containing glucose, zinc, and calcium. Her spirits are also very good. I'm not sure if there's a problem. I would like to ask the experts. Thank you!Doctor's answer:
??????Babies who are normally breastfed can occasionally have light green stools. If the baby's stool is dark green, it indicates poor digestion. When the stool is acidic, bile contained within it oxidizes in the air to turn green. Bilirubin in bile is a yellow pigment, and when it stains the stool, it turns it yellow. After oxidation, bilirubin turns into biliverdin, which makes the stool green. When the stool is exposed to oxygen in the air while in the diaper, bilirubin oxidizes to biliverdin, causing the surface of the stool to turn green.
