He is the person the young Mao Zedong admired the most, and the one Chiang Kai-shek studied all his life. He is the most outstanding military commander, the most excellent litterateur, and the deepest thinker of modern China, the pioneer of modernization in China, and the founder of the Self-Strengthening Movement. He led the Xiang Jun, a corps of fierce warriors from Hunan, to suppress the vast and sweeping Taiping Rebellion that swept across most of China, earning the admiration of countless people while also provoking the hatred of many. He was a good official, a good commander, a good poet, and a good father, respected by all who met him, a rare figure to appear only once in five hundred years. He was the backbone of the declining Qing Dynasty, an executioner and a man-murderer, capturing cities and seizing land, turning the land red with blood. His solitude, his suffering, his joy, his tears, his profound gaze, and his unwavering will are all merged into these six million words. Without him, the history of modern China would have been completely rewritten. The hardships and turmoil of modern China, the worries and merits of the generation of great heroes—all are reflected in these six million words. Read the story of the Taiping Rebellion, and read the Collected Works of Zeng Guofan.
