What causes phlegm in a child's throat

Patient's question:

I don't know what's going on, but my child has been misbehaving lately and crying non-stop. Even the hospital check-up didn't help. Could you please tell me what causes a child's throat to have phlegm?

Doctor's answer:

The respiratory system of infants and young children is not yet fully developed. If they have phlegm, they may not cough it up, and it can easily get stuck in the throat, trachea, or be swallowed into the stomach. Parents should help their children expel phlegm in a timely manner.
If a baby has a lot of phlegm, it is recommended to drink more warm water; keep the indoor air fresh by opening windows frequently for ventilation; increase rest time and ensure adequate sleep. Side-lying positions can also be helpful. There are many causes of respiratory problems in children. If a child is diagnosed with a respiratory condition, parents need to cooperate with the doctor for immediate treatment, including gastric decompression, and develop good hygiene habits. The child should have a balanced diet and avoid stimulating and cold foods.
