The first year of the 21st century was indeed an extraordinary and turbulent one. As the 6 billion people around the world were still reveling in the joy of entering the new century, unexpected and shocking major breaking news events continued to unfold globally. International relations became even more complex, and uncertainties grew increasingly intricate. From the U.S. new president's inauguration in early January, where he aggressively pushed for unilateralism, angering many countries, to the April 1st China-U.S. plane crash incident, which provoked widespread outrage among the Chinese people and forced an apology from the U.S.; from the shocking Nepalese royal family's sensational patricide case to the devastating 9/11 terrorist attacks that shocked the world; from China's successful entry into the WTO to achieve win-win cooperation, to the successful hosting of the APEC Leaders' Meeting in Shanghai; from the end of the U.S.'s 10-year economic growth period to the downward revision of global economic growth forecasts, and even to the financial crisis that broke out in Argentina at the southern tip of the Americas, leading to political instability and government changes by the end of the year. Looking back at the past year, it became evident that major news events occurred almost every month.
