Author's Preface: Joe
Since autumn 1998, Michael and I have planned to write a book about PowerBuilder development. However, the project's development schedule was always packed, and we didn't start writing until June 1999. Based on long-term practical experience, the three most common bottlenecks faced by developers are:
(1) Learning a new development tool and hoping to be guided through the development process with simple and easy-to-understand steps.
(2) Encountering difficult issues during development and hoping to find complete online solutions to all doubts.
(3) Completing the project's development, testing, and release within the scheduled time.
PowerBuilder's interface has always been designed to be simple and easy to understand. With some basic programming language skills and a complete understanding of technical concepts, you can overcome these development bottlenecks with PowerBuilder's friendly interface and the detailed explanations in this book. With just a few hours, you can develop a basic, functional application, significantly reducing the learning difficulty for developers. Moreover, through the design of this book's course, the more challenging information is intentionally hidden to reduce the learning burden.
This book is aimed at beginners who are interested in or want to learn about PowerBuilder, or MIS departments that want to introduce PowerBuilder as a development tool. It allows you to evaluate whether this development process can accelerate your development speed. It is recommended to install the trial version of PowerBuilder7 that comes with the book while reading it, so you can refer to the On-line Help while reading. This will help you understand the detailed usage of each function.
The book is divided into three parts:
Part 1 explains the tools included in PowerBuilder7 and the types of development architectures it supports.
Part 2 explains the steps and methods for developing in a C/S architecture using PowerBuilder7.
Part 3 explains some important concepts of PowerBuilder7.
I would like to express my gratitude to Miss Hong Huiling for her strong support, as well as General Manager Guo Junnan, Miss Huang Liuzhen, Mr. Luo Qingzu, and my colleagues in the studio. Without you, this project would not have been realized. The completion of this book is just the beginning. Only with continuous effort and improvement can we achieve better results. I welcome your criticism and suggestions. My email is: joe.liu@ms9.url.com.tw, or you can also visit our website at www.it_builder.com.tw.
