Zizhi Tongjian is one of China's most renowned comprehensive chronicles. With 294 volumes and over 3 million words, it covers 1,362 years of history from the 23rd year of King Weilie of Zhou (403 BC) to the first year of Emperor Xuande of Later Zhou (959 AD), encompassing 16 dynasties, including Zhou, Qin, Han, Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Song, Qi, Liang, Chen, Sui, Later Liang, Later Tang, Later Jin, Later Han, and Later Zhou. The title and preface of Zizhi Tongjian were granted by Emperor Shenzong of the Northern Song Dynasty, meaning "to learn from past events and draw lessons for governance." Compiled by the historian Sima Guang over 19 years, it was praised in the General Catalogue of the Siku Quanshu as "extensive in scope and profound in thought." Since its publication, emperors, high officials, and scholars have regarded Zizhi Tongjian as the epitome of "governing the state by example."
