Features: Liu Songnian, a Southern Song Dynasty painter. Born in Qiantang (now Hangzhou, Zhejiang), he was a student of the Cunxi Painting Academy and served as a court painter during the Shaoxi period of Emperor Guangzong (approximately 1190-1194). During the Ningzong period (1194-1224), he painted the "Agricultural and Textile Picture." He excelled in landscape painting, learning from Zhang Xunli (whose given name was Dunli, and who studied under Li Tang). His brushwork was precise and meticulous, his colors were elegant and beautiful, often depicting lush forests, towering bamboos, and landscapes of clear mountains and flowing water. The houses he painted were meticulously rendered in architectural perspective. He was also skilled in figure painting, capturing vivid expressions and dynamic drapery. His works such as "The Alliance at Bian Bridge" and "The Four Generals of the Reunification" reflected his support for resisting the Jin forces and opposition to surrender. Later generations referred to him as one of the "Four Great Masters of the Southern Song," alongside Li Tang, Ma Yuan, and Xia Gui. His surviving works include "The Traveler at the Creek Pavilion," "Four-Season Landscape," "The Drunken Monk," and "The Arhat."
Liu Songnian was proficient in both landscape and figure painting, skilled in both ink wash and green-and-gold techniques. His brushwork was meticulous and rigorous, and his style was delicate and refined, creating many captivating works. His surviving masterpieces are relatively rare. From ancient records, we know that his landscapes depicted the beautiful scenery of Jiangnan, particularly the gardens of West Lake, often interwoven with the leisurely lives of literati and nobles. A few of his works even illustrated the mythical worlds of immortal mountains and pavilions, catering to the tastes of the upper class of that era. The "Four-Season Landscape Scroll" held by the Palace Museum is a representative masterpiece of his surviving landscapes, successfully portraying the seasonal beauty of the noble gardens around West Lake.
