How to treat pneumonia in children

Patient's question:

Hello! My child, who is four and a half months old, has developed bronchopneumonia. How long should I continue giving them medication? What are the side effects of taking too much medication for such a young child?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, for the treatment of pediatric pneumonia, blood tests are required. At least a complete blood count (CBC) should be performed to check white blood cell levels and determine whether bacterial or viral infection is more likely. If Mycoplasma infection is suspected, blood tests for Mycoplasma antibodies will be needed.
General treatment involves anti-infection therapy, with antibiotics selected based on the pathogen. Additionally, treatments such as expectorant and cough relief may be added. Most cases improve within about 1 week, but some infections may take longer to treat.
