What is benign neonatal sleep myoclonus?

Patient's question:

Hello, my cousin's newborn is already over 40 days old. The child is growing normally, but occasionally has trembling in the arms and legs while sleeping. It stops after a very short time. There should be no noise at all; any sound will wake the child, and sometimes they cry and fuss.

Doctor's answer:

Now the baby is still small, the brain development has not yet been fully mature, and its functions are not yet. In contrast, the lower brain centers and spinal cord have already reached a relatively mature functional level. Therefore, the movements of newborns are mainly achieved through subcortical centers such as the spinal cord, and they are not fully controlled by the cerebral cortex. As a result, there are often purposeless, involuntary tremors of the limbs. Therefore, the trembling of newborns' limbs is a normal physiological phenomenon and is completely unrelated to convulsions or calcium deficiency. It is also completely unrelated to what the elders say. As long as the baby is not crying frequently, there is no need to worry. It will get better as it grows older. However, if there are other conditions, it is necessary to consult a doctor.
