Brief Introduction to A Selection of Chinese Literature Through the Ages (Volume 2 of the Middle Series)
Author: Zhu Dongrun (1896–1988), a native of Taixing, Jiangsu, was an expert in ancient Chinese literature and various literary genres. In 1916, he graduated from South West College in London, England. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as the Director of the Chinese Department at Fudan University and the Honorary President of the National Writing Society. He was one of Fudan University's first doctoral supervisors. He taught courses such as the History of Chinese Literary Criticism, Studies on Lu You, Studies on Mei Yaojun, and Chinese Literature at the Chinese Department, and mentored dozens of master's and doctoral students. His research areas included ancient Chinese literature and ancient Chinese history, with a particular expertise in writing biographies of historical figures. He excelled in integrating ancient Chinese literature with Chinese history, emphasizing the collection and analysis of historical materials. His biographical works include The Life of Zhang Juzheng and Discourse on Du Fu, among others. His Outlines of the History of Chinese Literary Criticism is one of the earliest literary criticism works in China. He was also a calligrapher, skilled in seal script, clerical script, running script, and cursive script.
