Publish Date: 1999-12-01
Features: Based on the "Standard for the Classification of Cultural Relics" issued by the state, this book collects over 3,000 representative cultural relics from major museums in China that have been appraised, especially those that can serve as reference points for classification. The collected artifacts are categorized into 14 types under 8 sections based on their material: Ceramic Section, Jade Section, Bronze Section, Calligraphy and Painting Section, Gold and Silver Section, Craft Section (Lacquerware, Enamelware, Bamboo and Wood Carvings, Textiles), Murals and Stone Carvings Section, and Stele and Inscriptions Section. Generally, artifacts in each category are arranged in chronological order by dynasty or era; bronze artifacts are arranged by the chronological order of their forms. Before each section in each volume, cultural relic appraisers, based on their practical experience, distinguish the uniqueness of different artifacts and provide special articles that list typical artifacts of each level, type, era, and characteristic, explaining the reasons for their classification and briefly highlighting their value. The entire book uses the name of the cultural relic as the entry, with annotations including the name of the artifact, era, dimensions, weight, time and location of discovery, collection unit, form and decorative features, as well as an explanation of the artistic, scientific, and historical value of the artifact. Each artifact is accompanied by one image and one text, with equal emphasis on visuals and detailed descriptions. By combining the appraisal statements of the historical, artistic, and scientific value of cultural relics, local enlargements or highlights of key features are provided. At the end of each volume, there is an appendix titled "Standard for the Classification of Cultural Relics" and "Examples of the Classification Standard for First-Class Cultural Relics." This book serves as an important reference tool for cultural relic workers and enthusiasts for appraisal and classification.
