Features: This dictionary is primarily aimed at middle and primary school students as well as general social individuals, catering to the needs of language learning. It provides analysis of easily misread characters, combining explanations of phonetics, semantics, and grammar with simple and easy-to-understand example sentences. This helps readers understand the reasons behind misreadings and offers correct pronunciations. It serves to supplement classroom teaching, broaden horizons, and firmly grasp the pronunciation of commonly used characters, thereby improving the ability to use Chinese. The dictionary includes 1,433 entries, divided into 645 groups.
Our middle and primary school Chinese teaching places great emphasis on improving the recognition and application abilities of Chinese characters. Learning Chinese requires the correct use of characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and passages, with the foundation being characters and words. Without a proper understanding of these two basic units—characters and words—it is difficult to effectively master larger linguistic units such as sentences, paragraphs, and passages. Due to some inherent characteristics of the Chinese language, such as the lack of extensive morphological features, relatively simple grammatical forms, a prevalence of monosyllabic words, and a focus on compound words based on monosyllabic morphemes, the connection between Chinese characters and vocabulary is particularly close. Therefore, character teaching has gone beyond the mere realm of pure shape recognition and is closely linked to vocabulary learning. This is the reason why we chose characters and words as the starting point when planning supplementary materials for middle and primary school Chinese teaching.
The Character and Word Analysis Dictionary consists of six volumes, with three focusing on single characters and the other three on compound words. Improving the understanding and application of Chinese characters and words is a long-term need in an individual's language learning journey. Thus, this series of reference books will also be helpful to general social individuals. Emphasizing fundamental and common usage is the principle behind compiling this series of reference books, and we have made efforts in the following aspects:
1. Topic Selection: The six volumes represent six topics. The three volumes on single characters address issues of reading, writing, and usage, while the three volumes on compound words address issues of word meaning, pronunciation, and similar/same forms, as well as easily confused and mistaken words. These six topics are both fundamental and important knowledge points in Chinese language learning.
2. Scope of Analyzed Words: The words analyzed are limited to common usage. Single characters are primarily selected from the 2,500 most commonly used characters and 1,000 less commonly used characters, with some general characters also included. The selection of compound words is based on the results of lexical measurement research. For example, synonyms are mainly selected according to the data on word usage frequency from the Modern Chinese Frequency Dictionary, generally falling within the range of 8,548 commonly used words. The selection of near-sound words focuses on those with high usage frequency, identical or similar pronunciation, but different meanings, which are easily confused, including dialectal pronunciation differences from standard Mandarin. For variant forms, the selection and analysis are conducted by testing both the standard and variant forms in a massive corpus of billions of characters, ensuring more objective and accurate results.
3. Presentation of Word Knowledge: Instead of aiming for comprehensiveness, the focus is on analyzing easily confused and mistaken aspects. Most dictionaries and reference books focus on individual characters and words, striving for complete and thorough definitions. However, to gain a deep understanding and correct use of a character or word, it is essential to understand the words adjacent to it and their subtle differences, thereby mastering their distinct usages. Providing this information and assistance is precisely what this series of reference books aims to convey to readers.
4. Definition and Analysis: The dictionary strives to use colloquial and accessible language, aiming for "deep yet simple" explanations.
