This volume selects 25 odes from the Book of Songs (including Feng, Xiaoya, Daya, and Zhou Song), 22 prose pieces from the Book of Documents, Zuo Zhuan, Guoyu, and Zhan Guo Ce, and 22 prose works from Confucian, Mohist, Daoist, and Legalist schools such as the Analects, Mencius, Xunzi, Mozi, Zhuangzi, Han Feizi, and the Rites of the Lu Family. It also includes 12 fu poems by Qu Yuan, Song Yu, and Xun Qing, and four myths from the Classic of Mountains and Seas. The Qin and Han sections (Part 1) contain 7 fu poems and 38 poems. The book is divided into three volumes, totaling six parts. The Upper Volume covers pre-Qin to the Northern and Southern Dynasties; the Middle Volume covers the Sui, Tang, and Song dynasties; and the Lower Volume covers the Yuan dynasty to the modern era. The selected works of important writers from various dynasties are chosen based on the unity of ideological depth and artistic quality, while also considering the diversity of themes and styles. The annotations are concise and to the point, making the book suitable as a teaching material for college and university liberal arts students, as well as a reference for secondary school teachers and general lovers of classical literature. Zhu Dongrun (1896-1988), originally named Zhu Shizhen, was from Taixing, Jiangsu. He studied abroad at Southwestern College in London in 1913. Upon returning to China in 1916, he served as a professor at institutions such as Wuhan University, Central University, and Qilu University. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he held the position of professor at Fudan University for many years. During his lifetime, he served as a member of the National Academic Degrees Evaluation Committee, a member of the Committee for the Compilation of Ancient Chinese Literature, and the editor-in-chief of Selected Works of Chinese Literature Through the Dynasties and Chinese Historical and Literary Studies. He was a renowned educator, biographer, literary historian, one of the founders of the history of literary criticism, and a calligrapher. His major works include Outlines of the History of Chinese Literary Criticism, Collected Essays on Chinese Literary Criticism, Collected Essays on Chinese Literature, The Complete Works of Zhu Dongrun's Biographical Works, and Selected Works of Calligraphy by Mr. Zhu Dongrun.
