Features: This dictionary is primarily designed for middle and high school students and general social individuals, catering to the needs of language learning. It selects 1,614 entries with similar or identical meanings but differing in connotation, usage, and other aspects, organized into 763 groups, with no more than four entries per group.
Our middle and high school Chinese teaching has always placed great emphasis on improving the recognition and application abilities of Chinese characters. Learning Chinese requires correct usage of characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and passages, with the foundation being characters and words. Without a proper understanding of these two basic units—characters and words—it is difficult to effectively master larger linguistic units such as sentences, paragraphs, and passages. Due to some inherent characteristics of Chinese, such as the lack of extensive morphological forms, relatively simple grammatical structures, a prevalence of monosyllabic words, and a focus on monosyllabic morphemes in compound words, the connection between Chinese characters and vocabulary is particularly close. As a result, character teaching has gone beyond the mere realm of pure form and is closely linked to the study of Chinese vocabulary. This is the reason why we chose to focus on characters and words when planning supplementary materials for middle and high school Chinese teaching.
The Dictionary of Character and Word Analysis consists of six volumes, three of which are about single characters, and the other three are about compound words. Improving the understanding and application of Chinese characters and words is a long-term need for individual language learning, making this series of reference books helpful for the general public as well. Emphasizing foundational and common usage is the principle behind compiling this series of reference books. To this end, we have made some efforts:
1. Topic Selection: The six volumes represent six topics. The three volumes on single characters address issues of reading, writing, and usage, while the three volumes on compound words focus on word meaning, similar/synonymous pronunciation and form, as well as easily confused or mistaken words. These six topics are both fundamental and important in Chinese language learning.
2. Selection of Analyzed Characters and Words: The analyzed entries are limited to common usage. Single characters are primarily selected from the 2,500 most common characters and 1,000 less common characters, with some general characters also included. The selection of compound words is based on the findings of lexical measurement research. For example, synonyms are mainly chosen based on data from The Modern Chinese Frequency Dictionary, generally falling within the scope of 8,548 common words. The selection of near-sound words focuses on those with high frequency, identical or similar pronunciation, but distinct meanings, including easily confused words between dialectal and standard Mandarin pronunciation. For variant forms, the selection and analysis are conducted using a massive corpus of billions of characters, ensuring objectivity and accuracy.
3. Presentation of Character and Word Knowledge: Instead of aiming for comprehensiveness, the focus is on analyzing easily confused or mistaken aspects. Most dictionaries and reference books focus on individual characters and words, striving for complete and thorough definitions. However, to achieve a deep and correct understanding and application of a character or word, it is essential to understand its neighboring words and the subtle differences between them, thereby mastering their distinct usages. Providing this information and assistance is precisely what this series of reference books aims to convey to readers.
4. Definition and Analysis: Efforts are made to use simple and accessible language, striving for clarity and depth.
