Publisher:
Publication Date: 2000-06-01
Features: This volume focuses on the painters and their works that inherit the tradition of Yuan Dynasty literati painting, with Wen Zhengming, Tang Yin, and Chen Daofu as the key figures of the "Wumen School." Wen Zhengming, as the leader of the "Wumen School" following Shen Zhou, possesses comprehensive talent and higher cultivation. He initially studied under Shen Zhou, later devoted himself to Zhao Mengfu, Wang Meng, and Wu Zhen, eventually forming his own style. His fine-line landscape paintings established the foundation of the "Wumen School" art. Chen Daofu, directly influenced by Wen Zhengming, developed his own path in both landscape and flower-and-bird painting. Especially his flower-and-bird paintings, which incorporate cursive calligraphy into painting, established a relatively complete system of literati ink wash painting and directly influenced later Xue Wei. Tang Yin, with profound learning, initially learned painting from the Southern Song Dynasty's "Academy Style," though he later also absorbed the strengths of literati painting. His exquisite art still retains a rich, refined [professional] atmosphere, making it popular among later generations. Xie Shichen, slightly later than Wen and Tang, deeply absorbed the influence of the "Wumen School" but also studied Dai Jin and Wu Wei. His works are delicate and elegant when fine and light, resembling the "Wumen School," but when bold and heavy in brushwork and ink, they approach the "Zhe School," showcasing a masculine beauty. This volume includes ten painters and 131 works.
