What does a scared baby look like?

Patient's question:

What symptoms might a baby show if they are startled? How long will these symptoms last? Will they affect the child's physical and intellectual development?

Doctor's answer:

Hello; When a baby is startled, it may cry and become restless. When a small infant sleeps, if there is a loud noise, the baby often contracts both arms and legs simultaneously or trembles rapidly, exhibiting a "startle" reflex. Sometimes, it may even cry loudly. Don’t worry! This is a special unconditional reflex unique to infants and is a normal phenomenon. At this stage, the infant’s brain is still underdeveloped, and the myelination process is incomplete. When external stimuli act on the peripheral nerves and are transmitted to the brain, the lack of myelin insulation allows excitement to spread to nearby nerve fibers. As a result, a clear focus of excitation cannot form in the cerebral cortex. Additionally, unmyelinated nerve conduction is slower, so infants react more slowly to external stimuli and are more prone to generalization, making them easily startled and crying.
It usually doesn’t last for too long and will not have a significant impact on the baby’s physical or intellectual development.
