Features: "Charlie Brown's misfortunes win our hearts. He is timid, lonely, and we always recognize him by his round head. What's rare is his interest in the meaning of life, and his friends call him 'fool'." — French Snoopy Web "Seeing the joy and excitement on children's faces as they run toward Snoopy, I'm sure no one's smile in the world can match my dad's." — Marcie (Schulz's daughter) Most people, like Snoopy, retreat into an imaginary world to seek happiness or escape reality. — Charles M. Schulz Bad luck is no longer just Charlie Brown's; now his good friend Linus is also in for a rough streak: During lunch, a soccer ball suddenly flies and hits his head; the person consoling him kisses the peanut butter lunch into his eyes; when he complains that his school is so unimpressive, a brick flies out of the teaching building and hits him on the head; his sister Lucy uses her endless nagging to force him to buy ice cream and then a sandwich. However, nothing is more frustrating than being betrayed by Snoopy. Linus and Snoopy meet "Ms. Mushroom" in the forest and enjoy her delicious cookies, who becomes his first crush. When deciding to visit "Ms. Mushroom" again, Linus is surprised to be told that she has an appointment with Snoopy that day, and the little dog has invited her for a pleasant picnic. Linus angrily says to Snoopy, "My first love is ruined before it even begins!" Marcie also runs into trouble, stemming from being pursued. This summer, a stranger suddenly falls for her and expresses his affection intensely. The boy, named Fred, calls her "Lamb Cake" constantly to attract her attention. To stop his "harassment," Marcie uses every extreme measure—hitting him with a first-aid kit, throwing a lunchbox at him, drenching him in a lake, and so on—but it does no good. Fred confesses that he understands love is painful, and since Marcie hit him, he has a deeper appreciation for this kind of love.
