Features: This book is a textbook for the foundational stage (first and second years) of Czech language studies at the university level. The entire series consists of four volumes, with one volume taught per semester. The primary goal of Czech language instruction in the foundational stage is to enable students to master the basic knowledge of Czech, acquire fundamental skills in using the language through repeated practice both inside and outside the classroom, and prepare them for the advanced stage (third and fourth years). Below is a brief explanation of the writing philosophy and teaching arrangement of this book.
(1) Introduction to Phonetics: Czech belongs to the Slavic language family. As a phonetic script, Czech is written as it is pronounced, which makes it much easier to learn than some other foreign languages. However, to help students gradually master the correct pronunciation, spelling, and writing of Czech from the beginning, this book includes an introductory phonetics section (comprising eight lessons, with one lesson taught per week).
(2) Grammar Section: Czech is an inflectional language, and its complex word forms pose a significant challenge for Chinese students. Therefore, this volume pays great attention to the declension, conjugation, and gradation of Czech nouns, verbs, and other grammatical elements. At the same time, to cultivate students' ability to proficiently master and apply grammatical knowledge, as well as to develop good listening and speaking habits, we have also incorporated other effective modern language teaching methods.
(3) Texts and Vocabulary Section: To enable students to learn phonetics in the context of natural speech flow and to provide sufficient language practice during grammar instruction, each lesson includes main texts, supplementary texts, and review texts, all of which are based on daily-life themes.
(4) Exercises (Homework): To help students digest and reinforce the Czech knowledge learned in class, in addition to the texts, phonetics, or grammar sections, each lesson also includes exercises.
