Yan Jiaoyan on Fiction

Author: Yan Jiayan

Features: For fiction, Yan Jiayan has read widely in ancient and modern Chinese and foreign literature since childhood, with interests that can be considered quite diverse. He advocates for a variety of fiction styles. In his view, themes, creative methods, and genres cannot determine the actual achievement of a work; what truly matters for creation is the depth of the author's life experience, the level of their literary and cultural cultivation, and their own artistic talent. These perspectives have largely been reflected in his long-term research practice, and readers can also sense them in the more than twenty articles collected in this volume. This series of essays follows a principle of being both open and relatively stable, attempting a format where one or more essays are written on a single topic, promoting the spirit of intellectual debate. The first volume primarily focuses on academic discussions by renowned experts and scholars. The upcoming second volume will mainly focus on the insights, understanding, feelings, and experiences of famous writers regarding literature (including one hundred years of Chinese literature) and its creation. It is hoped that readers will benefit from the wisdom of the essayists in their understanding of both human nature and literary creation.
