Ansel Adams, a famous American landscape photographer, published dozens of photographic books and collections in his lifetime. In his later years, he revised a new series titled Ansel Adams Photography, which is a systematic summary of his decades of photographic practice. This book, Ansel Adams on Photography (hereinafter referred to as "on Photography"), is mainly based on the second volume of the "new series," The Negative (1981 edition). Since the book discusses various aspects of photography and offers unique insights, it is titled Ansel Adams on Photography. The first volume of the "new series" is The Camera. In addition to detailing the construction and performance of various cameras, it also touches on some photographic topics. The chapter "Imagination and Image" in this book is compiled based on the first chapter of The Camera and the second chapter of The Negative. This is because the content of these two chapters primarily discusses "imagination"—one from the perspective of the camera and the other from the perspective of the image on the negative. Combining them for discussion may provide a more thorough and comprehensive understanding of the concept of "imagination." The chapter "Image Control" in this book and the chapter "Aperture and Shutter" in Chapter 3 are excerpts from relevant chapters in The Camera. The appendix "Lens Formula" of The Camera is included as Appendix II of this book, which may be more useful for readers.
