The content strives to broadly reflect all aspects of Beijing society, including politics, economy, education, science and technology, culture, health, sports, urban construction, etc. It appropriately documents major activities of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council, as well as the achievements in the development of institutions in Beijing. Contemporary Beijing Major Events (1949-2003) was edited by Zhou Yixing as the chief editor and Dai Zude as the deputy editor. The part covering 1949-1989 remains based on the version of Contemporary Beijing Major Events (1949-1989), with only minor modifications and deletions. The original Postscript of the first edition is included in the appendix of this book. The manuscript for the new section from 1990 to October 2003 was written by Xu Fang and proofread by Zhu Yufen; Zhou Yixing, Dai Zude, Yang Naichao, and Wang Guohua reviewed and revised it.
