Features: The Flying Land Art Studio was founded by a renowned artist. It was China's first private art workshop. In the autumn of 1999, Wang Huaxiang, who had just returned from a study trip to Paris, France, brought several Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) trainees and over ten art enthusiasts from all over the country to a mountain gully in the northern suburbs of Beijing to sketch. This event was named the "Making Mistakes Work for You Sketch Camp." Subsequently, over a dozen CAFA trainees rented a workshop near the academy's transit center to have classes with Wang Huaxiang, where he conceived the idea of establishing a formal institution. By the winter break, most of the trainees had returned home. By the winter break, most of the trainees had been admitted to the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the China Academy of Art, with their study time lasting less than 40 days. From then on, the Flying Land attracted a steady stream of students, with the number increasing to over 30 before the next college entrance exam, and including over 50 trainees. Over 90% of the students were admitted to universities, and among the trainees, those with higher degrees were becoming more numerous—university professors, vocational and secondary school teachers, real estate merchants, professional painters, university sophomore students who had dropped out to study at the studio, and rural young men who had never held a paintbrush. The works of Flying Land's teachers and students also became the target of competition among art publishers. By 2002, three publishers had signed agreements with the studio, with many more expressing interest in collaboration.
The Flying Land Art Studio is not only an educational institution but also a creative entity and a private art museum. Soon-to-graduate students will become the first generation of professional artists, and the studio has already begun collecting artworks with a plan. In the future, the studio will also establish a gallery to help talented artists sell their paintings and provide them with financial support.
This book introduces the techniques of sketching, including works such as "Laoco?n's Profile," "Pirates," "Laoco?n," "Cowboy Jacket," and "Zeus."
