Features: The Selected English-Chinese and Chinese-English Dictionary, published in collaboration between Commercial Press and Oxford University Press, has been printed 12 times since its first edition in 1986 and has been distributed over 1 million copies domestically and worldwide, enjoying great popularity among readers. The Selected Russian-Chinese and Chinese-Russian Dictionary, also published in 1986, has gone through four printings. Based on the editorial experience of these two dictionaries and considering China's current development toward all-around reform and opening-up, our press has specially launched the Selected Bilingual Bidirectional series of dictionaries, which includes English, French, German, and Japanese, in addition to the previously published two. This series comprises five dictionaries: Selected English-Chinese and Chinese-English Dictionary, Selected French-Chinese and Chinese-French Dictionary, Selected German-Chinese and Chinese-German Dictionary, Selected Japanese-Chinese and Chinese-Japanese Dictionary, and Selected Russian-Chinese and Chinese-Russian Dictionary.
When Chinese editors compile foreign language dictionaries, it is often difficult to ensure standardization, selection scope, and reflection of linguistic innovations. Foreign original dictionaries may also lack relevance to Chinese readers' needs. To address this, this series of dictionaries has pioneered a collaborative publishing model by partnering with reputable foreign publishing houses known for their excellence in dictionary production. These partners include: Oxford University Press (Hong Kong), Larousse (France), Langenscheidt (Germany), Orient Press (Japan), and The Press of the Russian Language (Russia).
We have adopted methods such as using the latest editions of suitable dictionaries provided by these partners as reference or having experts from both China and abroad review the preliminary drafts to ensure precise word selection, concise definitions, and appropriate examples. This approach has enabled the dictionaries to align with foreign usage conventions while meeting the needs of Chinese readers.
In recent years, the number of overseas learners and users of Chinese has grown significantly. To meet their needs, most of the foreign-Chinese dictionaries now include Pinyin and traditional Chinese characters in their Chinese definitions, while Chinese-foreign dictionaries include both traditional Chinese characters and Pinyin for entries. While bilingual bidirectional dictionaries, combining foreign-Chinese and Chinese-foreign dictionaries in one volume, are convenient—one volume can be used to look up Chinese from a foreign language and vice versa—readers often have different professional backgrounds and specific needs. Some may only need foreign-Chinese dictionaries, while others may prefer Chinese-foreign dictionaries. Therefore, both combined and split volumes are available for readers to choose based on their requirements.
This series of dictionaries is a general-purpose language reference tool, suitable for both beginners and intermediate learners, as well as administrative, secretarial, and professional users for daily reference and problem-solving. The dictionaries are compactly organized, clearly presented, and feature a portable design, making them an ideal foreign language tool for all professionals.
